A Century of Bucket Hats

As the season for bucket hats is upon us, we started reminiscing about how we first started to offer bucket hats. It all began when the children in Grupo Cajolá’s preschool needed hats to protect themselves from the sun while they were playing outside. The Maya Mam Weavers seamstresses took fabrics they had on hand and designed a small bucket hat with a brim that would protect their necks and eyes. From the first test wearing them at the sand table, they knew they had a winner. The children, their teachers, their mothers – and Mayamam Weavers team in the U.S. all loved them! So, we began to offer them in the U.S. in two sizes, 19” and 21”, one to fit babies/toddlers and one to fit preschoolers/young children. They were well received and we had a couple of full grown adults reaching out asking if we could make a bigger size. So we did!

While our bucket hats have been around for many years, the original bucket hat can be traced back to Ireland in the early 1900’s. The first bucket hats were worn by Irish farmers and fisherman. The hats were made of wool, a naturally water-resistant material. The characteristic brim protected their necks and eyes from the sun and rain. Soon after, the British upper class adopted the fashion while they indulged in outdoor sports and activities. Their practical shape and ease of folding led to their adoption by soldiers during WWII and the Vietnam War. The continue to be worn by people in the military today.
It was during the 1960’s that the bucket hat became not just a practical headpiece but a fashion statement. The Mod culture in Britain welcomed an "anything goes" fashion attitude. In the 1980’s and 90’s, the bucket hat was the style icon for hip hop musicians and fans. Over time the shape has changed a little and different fabrics have been used to make them.

The bucket hat is eminently practical, accounting for its longevity. It is very comfortable, conforming to your head, and shielding you from sun or rain. The soft construction makes it very packable in your beach tote or your weekender, or even your back pocket. Since our bucket hats are reversible, you get two looks in one. No complaints about taking care of it either, just toss in the washing machine when it needs a cleaning.
Bucket hats have a fascinating history that spans different cultures and social classes. Originally created for practicality, they evolved to become a versatile fashion statement that continues to this day.
